Mermaids have of course been the subject of folklore throughout various parts of the world for centuries, and depicted in art in various cultures as well. But what did Christopher Columbus have to say about Mermaids?

In January of 1493 Columbus wrote in his journal, after reportedly seeing three mermaids, they are “not as pretty as they are depicted (in art), for somehow the face looked more like a mans."

Hrmn. Well, it’s possible that Columbus just saw a manatee. A voluptuous manatee.
